Winscombe RFC

14 - 21

(HT 0-0)

Bristol Telephone Area RFC

Match report by Nick Relph

Another must win game for Bristol Telephones today against Winscombe IIs.

The game kicked off with a flying start. Kyle got us started with the kick to Winscombe and Brad charged in with a huge hit to make his presence known.
The turn-over caused by the fast start allows Phones’ to start making some ground with a few good carries and intense rucking. Expert passing and a great curving run for Ammuray puts 5 points on the board early doors. Converted by Kyle to male it 0-7 2 minutes in.
Winscombe make some ground back after a penalty for a high tackle by Big Joe but the Phones’ line speed is too much for Winscombe and causes a knock on. First scrum of the game.
The following few minutes is scrappy and both sides are giving away a flutter of penalties. This culminates in the second scrum of the game, Winscombe have the put in. A huge full pack effort creates a turn over and the players and supporters roar with delight.
The back and forth continues until Jake makes a clattering tackle, dragging a Winscombe player into touch. The ref deems this to be high again and as this is the third one of the game from The Phones’, Jake is shown a yellow card.
Winscombe start to take advantage of the man advantage and pin The Phones’ in their own 22 for the next 10 minutes. Penalty after penalty is given Winscombe’s way, however, a strong defensive effort eventually creates the turn-over and Kyle makes the clearance.
Neither side make any clear chances for the rest of the half and it ends 0-7 at half time.

The second half kicks off and Lammy collects the ball from the restart and offloads to Joey. After a few phases Jake rockets off up the pitch and makes a good 30m gain. This is cut short when he knocks on but the penalty advantage takes us back into our own half.
Some kick tennis ensues and Winscombe end up putting a few phases together. This ends when the centre tries a log lob pass to the wing which goes straight into touch.
After a good strong scrum and some nice hands from 9, 10 and 12 brad takes off up the far wing. He runs out of steam 30m later and after a dink over the top Winscombe regain possession.
The line-out that comes from a penalty on Winscombes 5m line is disrupted and stolen by The Phones’ and after some strong carries and pinpoint accurate passing, Jake beats 2 defenders to dot down between the posts. Conversion by Kyle makes it 0-14 Phones.
Poor discipline from Winscombe means the ref has no choice but to reverse the restart and Kyle takes the kick into touch for a Phones penalty.
Nothing much happening for the next 15 minutes other than some back and forth and plenty more penalties from two tiring sides.
Eventually Phones break through again with multiple phases culminating in an offload from Lammy to Harrison who dives over the line under the posts. Conversion added again by Kyle. 0-21 Phones.
Winscombe hit straight back and finally get their first points on the board after 65 minutes with Josh scoring left of the posts. Converted by the scrum half. 7-21.
Undeterred, The Phones continue playing their own game and after a monster bump off by Lammy he appears to have barged his way over the line putting this game to bed. The ref unfortunately deemed this to have been held up and a frustrated Lammy launches the ball and is given a yellow card. Phones’ down to 14 men.
More middle park play continues and Justus is judged to have tackled high and gets given 10 minutes in the sin bin.
Winscombe take advantage of the 2 men advantage and make their way down the park. The scrum half picks up from a ruck and blazes over the line to score Winscombes second try and convert it himself. 14-21, surely they cant come back from here?
Phones manage out the last two minutes of the game and the ref blows for full time.
Winscombe IIs 14 – 21 Bristol Telephones.

Captain Rhino “Wow what a game. I am absolutely over the moon with the result today. Discipline let us down a little bit but this is something we can review and work on in training. As for today, we are going to just enjoy the win!”
